Église dite Chapelle Bonsecours (Chapelle)

Historique

A first chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built at the corner of Saint-Étienne and Saint-Joachim streets in the late 1780s. In 1810 the parish relocated its cemetery to land at the corner of Sainte-Ursule and Sainte-Anne streets, and the original wooden chapel was dismantled and rebuilt there as a funeral chapel. That structure deteriorated and was sold in 1857; a larger brick chapel, built the following year (1858) by local contractors Joseph Pelletier and Louis Tessier, replaced it and included an ossuary and crypt in its basement. The chapel became a site of Marian pilgrimage following the 1858 apparitions at Lourdes.
